About 1 of every 10 patients who enter a hospital in the United States develops an infection.

Roughly 90,000 of these patients die each year as a result, and a large portion of these deaths are caused by bacteria with resistance to antibiotics.

In addition to increased mortality, a 2012 study conducted at Columbia University found that each antibiotic-resistant infection costs, on average, at least $15,000 more to treat than susceptible infections.
